The HILO crystal vase collection is a fusion of traditional artisan glassblowing and industrial personalisation techniques, creating the possibility for manufactories to produce products with a contemporary aesthetic in a craftisan way. Glassblowers uses moulds made from hard solid wood, which degrades relatively quickly, the edges of the mould gradually dulling with amortization, thats why usually producing a small series of pieces with minimal variation. In the HILO collection, the variations due to amortization are seen as an aesthetic feature rather than a drawback in production, and the amortisation of the mould is in practice the key to creating unique pieces in series production.
The design of the mould is based on a system of drawing the wooden blow moulds: the moulds are made up of cylinders and stub cones adapted to glass-blowing with a view to the economical use of materials, with the height of the cylinder elements being fully customisable and the stub cone elements being partially customisable (the latter being so strong that free variation would damage the character of the object group).
The glass material, especially for the transparent versions, guarantees the sustainability of the product, since the material can be recycled in production, even if the mould can remain in production for much longer than the average duration, due to the ideological background of the collection.
The HILO vase collection won the BIG SEE Awards 2023.
